    WOrkshops for beginners

What is the workshops for beginners?

As part of the Summit outreach effort, SCMP will invite, identify and activate a group of newcomers to the DEI community who are passionate about our causes but often do not have the same access to knowledge, tools and resources to get started as most DEI professionals do.

We aim to empower this select group of new advocates to take that first step in creating a more diverse and inclusive environment at their own workplaces by providing access to specialised workshops on key DEI causes during the Summit, run by seasoned NGO practitioners and attended by their peers who share similar background and interest.

Who can participate in this programme?

Due to limited space, SCMP will select 60 participants who are most likely to benefit the most through this programme. The successful participants are likely to be:

    • Relatively early in their professional careers, likely to be in a junior to middle management role
    • Passionate about DEI causes such as women, LGBTQ and racial issues happening in our society
    • Working in a middle-sized, homegrown company in Hong Kong who may not have dedicated resources for DEI initiatives
    • Keen to help his/her company to begin to their own DEI journey
    • Have initial support for his/her direct manager to explore and learn more about DEI, and to bring about positive changes to their workplace

What are the commitment for participants in the workshops?

We understand that everyone's journey is different, and we aim to provide that jumpstarter to their passion and desire to create a better, more inclusive workplace.

In general, selected participants for the workshops will be asked to:

    • Complete a survey before the Summit to establish the benchmark of advocate's DEI knowledge, and for SCMP to understand their prioritised area of interest
    • Committed to the Summit as an active participant, by attending the morning conference programme and engage in assigned workshops taking place in the afternoon
    • Participate in a post-event survey six months after the Summit and potentially in discussion groups wto measure, reflect and amplify their collective lessons learned

    What are these specialised workshops?

The Summit will offer three individual workshops run by specialised practitioners from reputable NGOs in Hong Kong. These workshops can accommodate up to 20 participants each and will run for up to 90 minutes during the Summit.

    GENDER EQUALITY ALLYSHIP

    Knowledge Partner:
    The Women's Foundation

Gender is a core component of all Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.  A strong focus on addressing gender diversity and equality will enhance and advance overall DEI initiatives across the organisation.  As part of this, being a gender equality ally and cultivating allyship across the organisation is crucial to drive tangible change and close the gender gap. The pandemic has been a mirror to how important it is to be an ally - in building inclusive cultures and accelerating support for gender equality.

This masterclass will look at allyship's different forms, how to champion gender equality in the workplace to lead to practical change and how to address barriers to action.

Lisa Moore, Director of Research, Advocacy and Communications

Eleni Symeonidou, Director of Pipeline Initiatives, The Women’s Foundation

    LGBTQ+ INCLUSION

    Knowledge Partner:
    Community Business

The masterclass addresses the basics of LGBT + Inclusion in the workplace, terminologies, what allyship is and traits of an ally. The programme will also focus on how to build advocacy to help organisations continue to become inclusive to various gender identities and expressions. Through power of storytelling and sharing lived experience, the session aims to discuss the importance of allyship and advocacy and bringing allyship to action. The masterclass aims to differentiate how active allies can become advocates in their own journeys and organisations through action planning.

Peter Sargant, Chief Executive Officer, Community Business
Yee Lin Ng, Consultant, Community Business

    RACIAL EQUALITY

    Knowledge Partner:
    The Zubin Foundation

The masterclass on racial equality will give participants a toolkit to use internally to raise awareness on racial equality and to address anti-racism from a Hong Kong context. The toolkit will address common stereotypes, barriers that face ethnic minorities and practical tools to become racially inclusive.

Shalini Mahtani, Founder and CEO, The Zubin Foundation
